The Royal Wedding

Public events, UK

Most people in the UK were probably doing one of two things on Saturday 19th May. Either watching the FA Cup Final or celebrating the Royal Wedding.

As most of us at Delta don’t follow football, we were over in Windsor playing our part in delivering the royal occasion; a much-anticipated national celebration.

We were contracted by EAS, to provide PA and Communications outside Windsor Castle and the surrounding area.

Interestingly, this was the first time the castle battlements had ever contained speakers. We used L-Acoustics X12 speakers along the entire length of the castle wall providing a relay of the service to the public below, along the high street.

Sited high above the town of Windsor was Phil Kidd our Head of Comms. Climbing up The Round Tower’s 200 stairs over a dozen times, Phil accumulated a months’ worth of exercise in one day setting up the equipment.

Several links were provided around the castle and the Long Walk, which ensured clear communication across Windsor and outside areas between event officials and the police.

Along the length of the Long Walk we relayed the broadcast of the ceremony to an audience of over 150,000 people, from nine separate screens positions with ground-stacked PA at each screen.

Over in the neighbouring Alexandra Gardens and Home Park, the event was relayed to another 90,000 bystanders so no one would miss out on the occasion. The wedding was watched around the world with over 11 million viewers in the UK and over 22 million across the pond in the US. For all involved and in attendance, it was a truly wonderful experience and certainly one that will be remembered.
