Lumiere London

Events, Installations, United Kingdom

Illuminated art transformed iconic buildings across King’s Cross and the West End, turning the city into a nocturnal delight.

Supported by the Mayor of London, Lumiere London turned King’s Cross and London’s West End, including Leicester Square, Piccadilly, Regent Street, St James’s and Carnaby into a magical pedestrian playground and encouraged Londoners and tourists alike to explore the heart of the capital and view it in a new light.

Delta Sound was commissioned to provide audio for some of the more notable areas including twelve neon birdhouses that were nestled within Brown Hart Gardens. Accompanying them was a soundtrack of birdsong, calling out and responding, connecting the isolated birdhouses in the dark.  The birdsong, performed by humans, created a three-dimensional audio landscape that formed invisible connections between each birdhouse.

Grosvenor Square was the temporary home to an abstract digital painting, which uses light and music to re-imagine Van Gogh’s painting All Night Café, also required Deltas services.

Along Regent Street, pedestrianised for the event, crowds gathered to see Elephantastic!, a 3D, larger-than-life projected elephant stomping through the Air Street arch complete with sound effects.

Audio accompanied brightly coloured fish, lit by LEDs, as they danced gracefully with the elements, delighting audiences as they float and swoop through the air like exotic lanterns adorning the Piccadilly area. Whilst 195 Piccadilly explored the different genres of cinema and television using images from BAFTA’s archive.  The overall visual referred to the origins of 195 Piccadilly as the home of the Royal Society of Watercolour Painters. The animation was accompanied by a striking soundtrack, created by Ed Carter and inspired by the classic sounds that helped define these genres of film and television.

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, said: “I am thrilled by the success of Lumiere London, which brought a wonderful burst of imagination, colour and creativity to our city’s streets in the middle of cold, dark January. It could not have happened without the input and support of the many businesses and agencies who helped to make it happen.”  The team at Delta were delighted to have played their part.
