Horticulture & High-Speed Internet
For the fourth year running, DeltaLive will be supplying a high-speed, encrypted internet for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, taking place this week.
We are providing a 60MBPS connection which is synchronised bi directionally. This is done by optically transmitting a main and back-up circuit, over links between a mast at DeltaLive HQ and a second mast within the grounds of Hampton Court Palace.
The set-up of these masts involves rigging the equipment at ground level, connecting them and then sending the masts to a heady height of 40 metres. At this point we use cherry-picker trucks to align the links. An engineer is strapped in and sent up to the top of the masts where they perform the line-up. The views are always pretty impressive from these lofty baskets!
From this point our client, Etherlive, then re-configures the connection on-site. It is split between WIFI, internet for VOIP, and PDQ and ATM machines for the hundreds of retailers and visitors.
Why go to the trouble of setting up masts? Phil Kidd, Communications System Consultant at DeltaLive commented. “Quite simply, to supply a reliable, temporary internet connection to a greenfield site. We enable our clients to enjoy a secure, high-speed bandwidth connection that could normally only be achieved by installing costly fibre cables and comes with associated budgets. Also, in a lot of scenarios there’s just not enough lead time within a given schedule to allow getting the job done with other telecom suppliers.”
Although fairly large, the installation of these masts usually only takes a day or two to put up and one day to take down. The masts can be up from anywhere between one week to four (after four weeks you’ll need planning permission for the mast to continue in use).

Quite frequently we will have a mast up at DeltaLive HQ where its aligned facing central London transmitting internet bandwidth to a roof location in Park Lane. This effectively allows us to supply links from our offices to Central London and then onward to another location.

Well, very basically, when you’re onsite running an event, the very last thing you want to be doing is to be on the phone to the internet provider, trying to sort out a problem you don’t really understand.
