Delta sees the New Year in with a bang!

When the year comes to an end, Delta are always prepared and ready for the annual London fireworks display to bring the new year in with a bang! The end of 2018 was no exception, with 150,000 people gathered to witness the UK’s largest annual firework show, spanning Victoria Embankment, Belvedere Road and the area around Westminster Bridge. The display itself takes place over the River Thames, centred on the London Eye, creating an astonishing spectacle for the millions at home as well as those in attendance.

This year London celebrated their relationship with Europe as part of the Mayor’s #londonisopen campaign, and portrayed a message of support to the many European citizens currently living in the capital.

Delta have remained a longstanding supplier to Jack Morton Worldwide for the London New Year’s Eve show, and this year was no different; providing the northside of the Embankment with audio, whilst delivering communications relayed to Big Ben which was reopened to chime at midnight. Comms were also deployed for around 1,000 stewards and security throughout the event to ensure radio communication across teams was successful, along with integrated CCTV at the 14 entrances/ exits.

At front-of-house, Delta had 2 mirrored DiGiCo SD5 desks providing all zoned audio control with playback of specific show music, which was delivered by Apple iMacs running the latest QLab DAW. Two of these systems were synchronised together as a main and backup. Audio and control transport to the south of the river (Royal Festival Hall and London Eye) was achieved using Riedel MediorNet and RockNet units connected via a 3.5Km fibre optic loop.

Audio to the 8 remote crane PA towers was transmitted by high-power RF with the sounding of the Big Ben chime being captured by multiple microphones and transmitted to front-of-house from the top of Queen Elizabeth Tower via microwave link. A backup system was also deployed, consisting of a 5.8GHz point-to-point link and SystemBase IP Codecs. The loudspeakers used by Delta were exclusively L-Acoustics, utilising a mix of K2, V-DOSC, KARA and ARCS II.
