Prom 54: Duke Ellington’s Sacred Music

With a rich jazz history that goes back to the US prohibition era and the infamous Cotton Club in Harlem, Duke Ellington’s Sacred Music Prom was bound to be impressive. A Sacred Music concert filled with jazz and entertainment pizzazz, creating a spiritual celebration like no other.

As part of the Proms season this programme was a great example of how the L-ISA technology is used to allow the audience to enjoy a fully immersive experience.

The L-ISA technology enables artists to create and deliver new multidimensional sound experiences for live performances. This comprehensive ecosystem of audio tools provides an extremely natural and vivid experience that heightens emotion and invites the listener inside the music. Making this Immersive Hyperreal Sound experience ideal for a sacred music performance.

Duke Ellington was a multiple Grammy award winner, celebrated for his ingenious use of the orchestra and for his charisma and eloquence. This Prom features a selection of sacred revues which combine big-band jazz with gospel and Broadway-style tunes. Creating what is described as ‘an exhilarating evening of song, dance and spectacle’.

Ellington was a very religious man whose music reflects the rich tapestry of African-American experience of the era. ‘Song and dance that comes from the heart is worship’ was a concept that resonated with Ellington. In the Beginning God opened Ellington’s first performance of Sacred Music at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco in 1965. It also opened Prom 54 in 2019.
