Meet the Team – Griff Hewis

A musician with a true passion for audio technology Griff has seen a unique and diverse 13 years with Sound By Design and Delta Sound.

Griff has had a keen interest in music from an early age, playing trumpet and keyboard in local orchestras, big bands and brass bands where he grew up in Hinckley, Leicestershire.

After gaining a ABRSM Grade 8 trumpet and Grade 7 piano he decided to pursue music technology as a career combining his love of electronics and music by going on to study at Kingston University obtaining a 2:1 BMus degree.  His dissertation on binaural recording was well regarded with his dummy head microphones appearing in many places around the university campus and local concerts!

Griff met Sound By Design when they were providing sound for his degree ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in 2000, After several years of freelance work for the company he was offered a full time position in 2004 as a junior engineer.

Since being at Delta, Griff has pursued his passion for the musical side of the business as well as any recording/broadcast roles that are required of him. He is regularly seen performing Front of House engineering duties at the Royal Albert Hall and has come to specialise in Jazz, big bands and classical music where his score reading abilities come in very useful! He also regularly designs and operates large scale multitrack recordings and broadcasts of concerts increasingly over 100+ tracks.

Notable highlights during his time at Delta have been engineering for the BBC Proms every summer at the RAH for over 10 years and being assistant broadcast mixer for London 2012 Ceremonies and Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Ceremonies. He was also part of the broadcast team at the Baku European Games 2015 to be awarded a Daytime Emmy Award.

Meeting and engineering for Quincy Jones at the Proms last year was a real dream come true for Griff.

When he is not behind a mixing desk Griff enjoys Photography, Sailing and the odd bit of Wine Tasting!
