Unveiling of Gandhi Statue

Events, UK

The unveiling of the 9ft bronze statue marks 100 years since Gandhi returned to India from South Africa to begin his struggle for independence. The statue was unveiled by Indian finance minister, Shri Arun Jaitley, in a ceremony which also involved Gandhi’s grandson, Gopalkrishna Gandhi.

British sculptor, Philip Jackson, was commissioned to create the work with his previous pieces including statues of the Queen Mother and Bomber Command. He said he was inspired by photographs of the civil rights leader outside 10 Downing Street on a visit in 1931.

Prime Minister David Cameron spoke at the unveiling of the statue which he called a “magnificent tribute”. Hundreds of people gathered to watch, while a band played Indian classical music and Indian flags flew around the square.

Delta Sound were appointed by FCO’s agency M-is to design and install a live sound solution for the unveiling in Parliament Square. Project manager Davey Williamson chose to install two line array hangs of L-Acoustics dV-DOSC to cover the audience area. Ten cabinets were flown from 8m towers provided by ‘Overlay’ staging services. Further dV-DOSC fill speakers and SB28 sub-bass units were used to ensure that every audience member could clearly hear the speeches presented from the stage. “The lectern was exposed to the elements and it was very windy, so we chose a Schoeps CCM4 dual microphone package which rejects almost all wind noise so the broadcasted sound was clear of noise for all media formats” commented Davey.

Experienced operator Chris Vass, used a DiGiCo SD5 mixing console to mix all audio elements of the show which included a live Indian music ensemble that performed before, during and after the show.
