Prom 36: Late-Night Mixtape

Prom 36: Late-Night Mixtape was a classical ode to the mix tape. Many may remember the joy of choosing your favourite songs, or perhaps those pertinent to a certain genre. Then, spending the time to curate the order and record them onto a cassette. This mixtape was designed to “explore the fringes of Minimalism and meditative listening”. Featuring a selection of “radiant choral sounds and heavenly strings, pieces by the godfathers of ‘holy’ Minimalism, Arvo Part and Peteris Vasks” along with J.S. Bach, Schubert and BBC Young Musicians winner, Martin James Bartlett.

But what made this Prom really stand out was the eclectic use of instruments. These included the Indian Sarod and the wine glasses! The Sarod featured in the world premiere of Soumik Datta’s Clouds, creating hauntingly captivating sounds. The wine glasses were introduced by the choir Tenebrae, who used them to make shimmering sounds, creating an almost ethereal effect.

“Providing the sound design and equipment needs to The BBC Proms season, this Prom was particularly interesting to amplify, especially in terms of our use of
L-ISA. The music involved a lot of spatial sounds, which, when amplified really worked well with the loudspeaker system. We were able to fully engage the audience with the music because of the abilities of the L-ISA technology. L-ISA enables artists to deliver a new multidimensional sound experience, heightening the sense of proximity and deepening the connections between the artist and audience. This immersive technology was ideal for this very meditative, Minimalism music.” Griff Hewis, Associate Senior Engineer, DeltaLive.
